Glacier Computer Adds Another Member to their Family of Rugged Tablet Offerings

T707    RUGGED – CONFIGURABLE – JUST SMALLER

New Milford, CT – September 1, 2013 – Glacier Computer, a leading provider of rugged industrial computing solutions, announces the addition of the T707 to an already powerful line up of rugged tablet options.  The T707 combines enhanced rugged specs, configurability, and better value into a very dependable package.  Glaciers “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” warranty program makes the T707 an ideal protégé for any portable application.

“If you were at all concerned about the long range durability of your iPad, the T707 would give you some comfort.”

The industrial marketplace lacks an iconic tablet that satisfies most applications so having one place to go with many options is a good place to start your search.  A closet full of choices, combined with Glacier’s ability to customize, equals maximum customer satisfaction for all your rugged tablet needs.  “Industrial customers are always challenged with finding the perfect data collection tool for their application.  Most products can get them to about 75% satisfaction.  With Glacier in the mix, you don’t have to settle for less than perfect.”

The T707 rugged tablet is completely sealed from dust and particulates and can withstand a water bombardment of 12.5 liters per minute from a nozzle.  Dropping the unit, even from 6 feet, is well within warranty coverage and specifications.  It has a 7.0” touch-screen display that can be used outdoors and all of the processing power and memory requirements necessary for most applications.  The T707 also has plenty of I/O to become the managing resource for all of your data collection activities.  Equipped with SOTI and Stay-linked you can be in complete control of your T707 fleet.  Windows 7 remains the standard OS for the T707.

The T707, combined with our other 7-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch units, offers Glacier customers some of the best options in an expanding line of rugged tablets.  And our partners, rugged computing expertise, and commitment to customer service remain our core values.

It’s Good to Have Options – T710 Tablet Docking Options

Glacier Computer’s new T710 Rugged Tablet Computer is getting a lot of attention, and docking options are an important part of that mix.

Having a tablet computer that is completely sealed from dust and particulates and can withstand a water bombardment of 12.5 liters per minute from a nozzle is great.  Having a piece of hardware that  can be dropped from 6 feet and still be well within warranty coverage and specifications is even more enticing.   And by itself, the  T710 has plenty of mobility, features, and I/O to become the managing resource for all of your data collection activities.  But what if you want to put it on a cart or a lift, or dock it in a vehicle?

The T710 has two different docking solutions with multiple applications.

The optional Mobile mount a dock gives you the option of putting the tablet wherever you need it.  You can dock it in a vehicle, on a forklift, a 4-wheeler, or a golf cart.  Fixed mount the system to a wall, at a point of service, or on a production line.  If and when you need it more mobile, just remove it and use it like a tablet.

While mounted, the dock provides 4 USB ports, a VGA out, RJ45, twin RS232 ports, and two antenna connections for GPS or other applications.  There’s a key lock to keep the T710 secured in the docking station until you need to remove it.

The T710 also comes with an optional desktop dock.  This docking station provides 2 additional USB 2.0 ports , HDMI, VGA, and a LAN port, with a DC-jack, and Kensington lock.  Combining these accessories would allow you to use the T710 as a desktop computer, a tablet computer, as a mobile mount unit in a vehicle, or in multiple fixed or mobile mount applications, wherever and whenever you needed it.

The T710 is just one of several 7″, 8″, and 10″  rugged tablet solutions available from Glacier Computer to provide you with all the mobility and “rugged” you require for your data delivery and collection needs.

Take a Tour of Mount Everest – From Your Smart Phone

mount-everest-3d-21

A company called  3D RealityMaps has released a new app that lets you take virtual tours using satellite images, of Mount Everest.

The app “Mount Everest 3D” by 3D Reality Maps offers the world’s highest-resolution 3D map of the highest mountain on earth for smartphones and tablets. The map is based on satellite images from unique satellite WordView2 of DigitalGlobe and is so precise that the mountain is represented absolutely realistic.

There’s a fully immersive free version (for both the Apple iOS or Android OS for smartphones or tablets) but if you are a hard core Everest fan you can buy the pro-version (through the free version) which includes GPS data, virtual tours, waypoints,  and offline maps–in case your provider doesn’t happen to have coverage in the Himalayas.

Then, surf over and take a tour of our Everest (Hey, it’s our blog, right?).  We don’t have a 3D App yet but if you are interested you can contact us and actually touch our Everest, run it through the paces, and see if it could help you get more done–even if your work environment is as rugged as Mount Everest.

And no Sherpa required.

Touchscreen PC Submerged Then Hosed off…Fully Powered and Operational

We took a fully functional touchscreen PC,  submerged it in a puddle of muck, then hosed it off, all while plugged in and running.. because we could.

This computer  (Glacier – S9000) is made for food processing operations,  outdoor kiosks, farms, or any any indoor or outdoor application, fixed or mobile, AC or DC power, anywhere you might want a shiny stainless steel unit you can hose off whenever you think it’s gotten too dirty.

Is Everything Built To Be Broken?

Refurbished technology or new? You should have options.

Consumer Electronics Talker Kim Komando recently published a list of common technology myths.  Things like MAC’s never get viruses, the more megapixels the better, public Wi-Fi is safe and a myth near and dear to our hearts–Always buy new gear.

To quote Kim…

As long as you buy direct from the manufacturer or a trusted re-seller  and there’s a good return policy and warranty in place, there isn’t much of a downside to buying refurbished.

Kim is referring to refurb as a first time buy and we agree.   There are plenty of great deals on “refurbished” consumer tech that cost a fraction of what new will run.  A great example is my first (and only) portable GPS system for my car.  I bought it so long ago I can’t recall, refurbished, for about a third of the retail price of a new one.  It still works great today.  And I have no plan or need to replace it.

But you can’t always use consumer tech in rugged applications and you can’t always start out with refurb.

What’s In Your Mobile Work-Force?

Cost of Ownership Makes Glacier Rugged Tablets a BargainYou’ve heard about it.  The global mobile workforce.  Well it’s growing.

The number of mobile workers across the globe will reach 1.3 billion by 2015 but research commissioned by ClickSoftware Technologies indicates that companies are not ready to tap this trend.

Forty-six per cent of CIOs surveyed believe current corporate strategy does not deliver on the ‘Mobile Dream.’ However, 74% of CIOs believe mobile customer service is important for the companies.

Mobile is where it‘s at, so much so that many workers use their own devices (BYOD) for work and home.  But as observed  here, the potential cost savings on equipment can quickly vanish as potential IT/security issues mount with regard to linked devices loaded with software that the employer does not control.

But that’s not the only barrier.  The mobile dream cannot be delivered from the retail shelf either.

Glacier Announces the Everest E4500 Rugged Forklift Terminal

GLACIER COMPUTER ANNOUNCES EVEREST E4500 RUGGED FORKLIFT TERMINALIntroducing the Everest E4500 Forklift Mount Terminal

Glacier Computer, a leading provider of rugged industrial computing solutions, announced today the addition of the E4500 to the Everest line-up of fixed and vehicle mount terminals (VMT’s).  The E4500 adds additional configuration options for their core markets of warehouse, distribution, manufacturing, and logistics.  The E4500 compliments an existing product line of Everest computers that support Windows 7, Win CE, and Linux applications.

“The Everest line of VMT’s has become an industry favorite.  The E4500 comes with some enhanced features, but more importantly, it increases bottom line value and offers additional options within the Everest product line”, says Glacier’s CEO, Ron D’Ambrosio.  “Customers are always challenged with the decision to replace existing hardware or continue to repair older devices.  Our job is to supply options and give advice on the best solution.  Given the stability of the Everest product line, many customers today are electing to upgrade their older equipment rather than purchase new.  The E4500 is another solution from our toolkit for customers to consider.”

The Everest E4500 utilizes the Intel Atom N270 1.6 GHz processor and comes in 10”, 12” and 15” resistive touchscreen displays, along with optional screen blanking.  Utilizing a solid state drive with both Windows and Linux operating systems, multiple I/O ports, vibration testing and wide range of operational temperatures, ensures reliable performance in most rugged environments.

The Everest family of fixed and vehicle mount terminals continues to expand and provide dependable, reliable, and affordable rugged terminals with a variety of operating systems, display sizes, mounting systems, and peripherals.  Glacier Computer offers experienced engineering services to customize hardware for specific customer requirements.

Shock and Vibration – The Everest Shake Test

Shock and Vibration can wreck a typical computer in short order.  They are not designed from the board up to withstand that kind of use.  They are meant to sit next to your desk and collect dust.  But the Everest Vehicle Mount Terminals are HALT tested, and engineered to continue working in the most extreme environments.

To ensure continued reliability, we regularly shake test them.  To do this you mount them to a shake table that vibrates at different frequencies.  You strap them in, start it up, and leave it for a while.  Maybe you shake it for a few hours, or even overnight, to ensure that vehicle vibration or shock will not cause a malfunction.  But you can’t exactly see that shaking on camera.  Modern anti-shake technology in today’s portable video cameras, make showing that vibration to you even harder.  So we added some ‘accessories’ to give you a sense of what a shake table does.

Then we recorded it for you.
